Marina spokesperson, Katrina Paterson, said it was a pilot for a special initiative to make sailing available locally for people with disabilities.

It is being held in partnership with RYA Sailability, Castle Semple Watersports Centre, and Sailability Scotland.

"We will be hosting two fabulous days of come and try sailing sessions, where people with disabilities can come along and give it a go," said Katrina.

She added that they don’t intend this weekend to be a one-off, but in order to sustain this programme, they need people to come forward and take part.

"To achieve this, it is important that we first offer places to local people and those who could come back again if they enjoy the experience," she explained.

She said that from winning a gold medal to crossing the oceans or being in sole control of a boat at sea, these are all things that disabled sailors can achieve, just as much as the able-bodied.

"With the right equipment, it’s likely you can get afloat and begin to follow a dream," she said. "Those who try sailing often speak of the new freedom it brings them."

There is a wide a selection of boats with experienced staff on hand throughout the weekend, who will make sure that the day will be tailored to the needs and expectations of those taking part.

"They will also have the opportunity to have a short run in a powerboat and to join us aboard one of our yachts for tea and cake," she said. "There are onshore facilities for those who wish to spectate."

The team from Castle Semple Centre will bring a selection of specialised equipment to demonstrate for the intitiative.

Initially, the event will only accommodate people who can self transfer and numbers will be limited to ensure a quality experience.

However, anyone is welcome along to find out what its all about, with the Marina intending to make the experience accessible to all in time.
