WALKING football sessions at Forres House Community Centre are open to anyone over 50 from 2-3.15pm on Fridays.

Co-organiser Mike ‘Tommy’ Ellis (70) confirms the games already attract around 13 players aged between 50 and 70 every week but there is always room for more.

He said: “The oldest we’ve had play was 78!

“Women play too, we have two who regularly join in.

“We just pick two sides and play - it’s good to get out every week, meet new folk and get fit while you’re having fun!”

Former Junior League referee, Martin Kennie, officiates the slower version of the beautiful game at the community centre, which is also organised by Moray Council sports coach Angela Bell.

Tommy said: “Martin’s lenient so you can run a wee bit but not much.

“However, in competitions, there’s strictly no running allowed so you just have time to receive and pass or make a quick turn.

“The standard in Forres is quite good.

“I’m always surprised by just how many folk are committed to walking football with such passion to play.”

The games last 10 minutes with time for a drink and a breather in between.

The players socialise with refreshments in Forres Coffee House afterwards.

“The staff at the centre really look after us,” said Tommy. “I’m disabled and recovering from cancer so health issues are a constant battle in my life but football is in my DNA ... I’ve played it my whole life and I won't stop now!”

He added: “It’s great to get out and do something healthy rather than sitting at home on a Friday night. It’s good for making new friends. No one gets hurt as we go easy. We all get on and have a good laugh.”

The cost is £3 per session. Call Tommy on 07795572984 for more information.
