Moray and Banff Referees Association to host streamlined course for want-to-be football referees in Elgin

A NEW course for want-to-be football referees is set to begin in Elgin on Sunday (April 7).

A streamlined version of the Moray and Banff Referees Association’s regular course is set to take place across two Sundays at Borough Briggs in Elgin.

The course usually lasts eight weeks, but a new format has been introduced as Moray and Banff aim to get new recruits through training in quicker fashion.

“The aim is that we can facilitate more referees on the pitch ahead of the summer and a busy schedule of grassroots football,” a spokesperson for the association said.

“It will hopefully benefit the new term of Elgin Boys League matches and various welfare matches.”

In recent years, there has been some trouble with regard to finding match officials - with a small number of grassroots matches called off as a result.

The referees that are signed up have been known to referee several times in one week to keep things ticking over, so there is demand for more.

There is still time to sign up for the course, which will take place at the home of Elgin City from 9.30am until 4.30pm on Sunday, April 7 and Sunday, April 14.
