TWO Moray boxers have been crowned Scottish champions at the national development championships.
A total of six youngsters from Elgin Amateur Boxing Club made the journey to Ravenscriag Regional Sports Centre in Motherwell over various weekends last month.
Forres Academy pupil Marcus McEwan was one of two Moray winners, with Jacob Ballingall also taking home a gold medal.
MacEwan (14), fighting at 72kg, overcame Kasper Karzazyuk (Shire) to reach the final.
The following Sunday he beat McKai Scoby (Lochee) to become a national champ.
Ballingall won a straight final at youth 60kg against Abdullah Altaf (Hamilton) to earn Elgin's second gold.
Two more Elgin ABC fighters battled throuigh to the final but had to settle for the silver medal.
Buckie High pupil Nathan Greene (14) showed what a skilled boxer he is by defeating two strong opponents in Miller Gordon (Kincorth) and Max Urquhart (Springhill) to reach the 48kg final.
He was unfortunate not to get his hand raised after a great final against Muhamed Ibrahim (Glasgow).
Speyside High pupil Liam Shiels beat Airdrie rival Logan McIlwraith in a junior 66kg bout to reach the final.
Elgin ABC head coach Paul Gordon said: "Liam was very unlucky in the final coming second on a 3/2 split when many watching thought he had won it, including his opponent (Kyle McGregor)."
Two other Elgin boxers were just edged out in the opening rounds.
Kurt Shaughnessy lost his 43kg schools bout to Finlay Robertson (Nithvalley) and Craig Mone was edged out by Glasgow City's Igor Salik in an 86kg development A fight.
