Moray has welcomed thousands of visitors to the area for this week's Scottish 6-Day Orienteering Championships.

The sporting festival began on Sunday at Lossie Forest, with the action switching to Darnaway, near Forres on Monday.

Each day is expected to attract around 2500 competitors to testing routes around the Moray woodlands.

The opening day at Lossiemouth saw athletes from as far away as Australia, New Zealand and USA racing through the forest.

Orienteers aged from 10 to 85 have entered the competition, which is also based at Forres, Roseisle and Culbin this week.

A number of local orienteers from the Moravian club are among the thousands involved in the festival.

Promising youngster Finlay McLuckie finished second at Lossie Forest in the M16A event out of 33 entries over 7.2 kilometres.

Joshua Britain was first in the M20 short course over 6.3km in a race against competitors from Norway, Sweden and France.

Michael Bishenden was 11th in the M18 long course (8.6km) ahead of 20 rivals from across the UK and Europe.

Organisers had to cope with an incident closing the A96 road for most of Sunday, meaning those who were delayed in their arrival were accommodated in their events.

One athlete gave up their run to respond to a whistle blown by an injured rival, highlighting the ethos of fair play and sportsmanship in orienteering competitions.
