A FORRES pensioner has set the standard for British olympians this summer, taking his place on a podium with a gold medal around his neck.

Forres Cyling Club rocket Peter Robertson (71) beat the best in Britain at the Masters National Cycling Track Championships at the Newport Velodrome, and is now preparing to take on the the rest of the planet at the world championships in October.

He said: "It will be much harder in October but gold is my aim. There’s an Italian I’ll be up against that’s very good but I think I can nail him."

Peter has only been back on the saddle for three years, nearly 40 years since he last rode competitively.

At Newport he won a bronze medal in the 500 metres time trial then a gold in the 2km men’s pusuit, both races being in the 70 plus category.

Having no proper facilities locally has not deterred Peter, who trains for five days a week using the hills and straights around Forres to condition himself for future glory.

Fellow cycling champion Peter Ettles is his coach, encouraging him to push pedals to the limits on his fixed wheel racer for up to four hours per day.
