Connor McWilliam takes over the role from Moray's player-coach Cameron Hughes, who has stepped up to a Scottish Rugby Union position as School Rugby Officer for Caledonia North.

McWilliam (26), who comes from Huntly, was part of the Moray squad who clinched the Tennent's Caledonia North Division 2 championship last season.

He is relishing the challenge of continuing the work carried out by predecessor Hughes in the role.

"With an incredible buzz around the club, with the under-16s winning trophies as well as the senior men, I want to play my part in continuing to grow Moray Rugby Club, to fulfil its potential in the future and be the best it can be at all levels," he said.

Nurturing the talents of local players from a young age is a primary target for McWilliam.

“I am hoping to begin to deliver rugby in the curriculum of schools," he added. "Direct conversations are being held with schools so that rugby can be delivered within curriculum time at school, which will allow me, as the development officer, to deliver during their school day.

"With help from Active Schools, we can also start to implement various programmes within the schools, such as leadership programmes for senior pupils, which can hopefully lead to developing senior pupils as coaches to help increase our delivery within primary schools."

McWilliam's time at home town Huntly saw him start playing rugby as a mini, developing through youth rugby and going on to play senior rugby at Moray, aged 18.

He classes his knowledge in Strength and Conditioning, and Sports Development as key characteristics obtained from his honours degree in Applied Sport and Exercise Science from Robert Gordon’s University.
