A group of Forres Mechanics fans, which included a handful of Forres Thistle players, came together to claim one of the top prizes at the 9 annual Highland League Fans Tourney at Lossiemouth on Saturday.
A goal from Rob Mackinnon early in the final of the “ToiletBowl” section saw Forres Mechanics (Taylor) triumph over the Milne’s High Legends ion the final refereed by Grade 2 official Bryan Braidwood.
After a slow start the Mechanics finished third in their group and were placed in the second section of the knockout draw where they met Ross County, a team who have won this part of the event on three previous occasions.
Chris Ross was the goal hero on that occasion, setting up a semi final tie with the referees, a group of whistlers which included former Clach and Nairn County player Gavin Dearie and Ally Bruce, a prolific scorer in the Junior ranks during his heyday. Although the Can Cans dominated they couldn’t find their way past John Campbell in the Refs goals and in the end it took two fantastic stops from goalie Neil Findlayson to send Forres through 2-0 on penalties.
Ultimately it was Mackinnon who grabbed the headlines with his only goal of the afternoon which was marked by a fly past from the Red Arrows, whose aerial display was an added extra for the 170 competitors.
The tournament raised over £400 for local charity the Opportunity Enhancement Trust and will go towards supporting the LEADER funded project to Develop Opportunities Through Sport in Moray.
