AN Elgin Duellist fencer has added to a clutch of medals collected in last year’s Scottish Youth Development Series by winning the under 15 Boys’ Epee title at the Scottish Youth Fencing Championships.

Owen Lewis (14), who is a second year pupil at Forres Academy, had to fight hard to win gold in the final by beating his Forth Valley Fencing Club opponent by a single hit (15-14).

After his win at the Linlithgow event, Owen said: "This is my best result to date and I’m sorry for putting my father through this nail-biting ordeal!”

The victory for the Scottish Pathways Training Programme fencer, who in December also won the Elgin Duellist Sally Low Quaich for the most improved fencer, has been hailed by fellow fencers.

His Elgin Duellist Fencing Club Epee coaches Callum Sutherland and Jon Goulding said: “Owen has a fantastic positive attitude. Win or lose he’s always able to learn from the experience. We are both delighted for him.

"The result is even more encouraging because Owen has another year to compete in this age group category."

Elgin Duellist Fencing Club was also represented at the tournament by Edwin Naughton (15) and Cameron Hay (16) who were competing in the Under 17 Boys’ Epee age group category.

Edwin secured fifth place and Cameron, who is at Buckie High School, came in sixth place.

“These are also very encouraging results for Edwin and Cameron," added Callum and Jon.

Elgin Duellist Fencing Club meets on a Thursday night at 6.30pm at Elgin High School.
