A THUMPING victory over Whitehills was followed up by a defeat against Islavale as Forres Thistle got their Grill League Cup campaign underway last week.

The Jags thrashed Whitehills 7-1 on Tuesday night to get their cup campaign started, but fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Islavale on Saturday.

Thistle finish their League Cup campaign on Tuesday night away to Nairn St Ninian.

Saturday's match reached half-time goalless. The first chance came when Harvey Henderson, on loan from Forres Mechanics, had a shot tipped over by visiting goalkeeper Ryan Brindle after 23 minutes.

Brindle was back in action just minutes later, tipping Neil Moir's 22-yard effort over for a corner.

There was a blow for the Jags as Matty Fraser limped off injured, and goalkeeper Dan Mcleod had to be alert to deny Brodie Christie one-on-one to ensure the scores were level at the break.

Three minutes after the turnaround and it was 1-0 to the visitors. A low cross was met by Christie and this time Mcleod was helpless as he was beaten from 18 yards.

Henderson went close again for Forres before the hour mark after a good build-up – but just moments later the visitors doubled their advantage.

Christie doubled his and his side's tally when he headed home from six yards.

Robert Scott, formerly of Deveronvale in the Highland League, made it 3-0 with 10 minutes to play with another close-range header.

Moir had a chance to grab a consolation for the Jags in stoppage time but shot a foot past the post after a good solo run.

The league begins for Thistle on Saturday with a trip to Hall Russell United.
