FORRES Thistle were knocked out of the Quest Engineering Cup at the second round stage after a 4-1 defeat to Superleague side Stonehaven at Logie Park on Saturday afternoon.

The home side started brightly and had the game’s first effort on goal. Good work down the right wing from Alex Innes saw his floated cross find Chris Hardie who managed to steer it goalwards, but his effort was comfortably saved.

Stonehaven went ahead on 12 minutes. Forres struggled to clear a ball into the box and it was eventually handled by Alex Innes. Keith Horne made no mistake from the penalty spot for 1-0.

Neil Moir was next to go close for Thistle as Ross Paterson crossed it in but the Forres winger shot just wide.

Forres found themselves two down just before the half hour mark. A free-kick given away at the edge of the box was drilled into the penalty area and Findlay Masson slotted it home from 15 yards completely unmarked.

Forres got back into the game before half-time when Neil Moir drilled a free-kick in from the left-hand side and Charlie Beck smashed home into the roof of the net from close range.

The Jags started the second half brightly, Chris Hardie again went close with a header but it was tipped around the post by Reece Duncan.

But it was 3-1 when another free-kick given away on the edge of the box saw a ball to the back post where Josh Christie headed home for 3-1.

Stonehaven soon found their fourth and final goal. Goal scorer turned provider as Josh Christie tackled Michael Payne on the half way line and raced down the wing before picking out Keith Horne who smashed home from the edge of the box.
