PROMOTION remains on the cards for Forres Thistle after a dramatic late goal saw them pick up a 1-0 win against Newmachar United.

With the game headed for a goalless draw, Neil Moir laid the ball on for Craig Robertson to hammer into the bottom corner from 20 yards in the 90th minute to pick up three vital points.

Brandon Hutcheson – soon departing to Highland League side Lossiemouth – had two opportunities in the first half, first heading a Moir cross wide on 20 minutes and then seeing a 20-yard half-volley tipped over by visiting keeper Simon Mitchell.

Toby Clark was denied at close range five minutes into the second period, but Robertson’s late winner saw Jags celebrate a huge win.

With the top five going up from the North Region Championship, the Jags sit fourth in the table and have just one game left to play.

However, promotion is just out of their hands – Rothie Rovers and Buchanhaven Hearts, who are fifth and sixth, will leapfrog Thistle if they win their games in hand.

The Jags can only make it as hard as possible for those two to finish above them by beating Glentanar in their final match at Logie Park on Saturday.
