Squads from Andersons, Applegrove and Dyke had top three placings in the P4/5 and P6/7 Girls and Boys sections of the contest that featured 37 schools.

"Forres area primaries finished amongst the top three teams in all eight team competitions - the only area to achieve this," said Active Schools coordinator, Paul Rogan.

"The event was a massive success with around 700 children taking part from schools all across Moray.

"It was a fantastic spectacle with up to 200 children in each of the four races, all within Grant Park."

Moray Active Schools organised the contest with help from Forres Harriers who marshalled and helped record the finishes.

It gave schools the chance to come together in friendly competition and allowed the children to participate in a truly big event.

"The spectator-friendly course set around the centre of the park created a fantastic atmosphere," said Paul.

"Parents, teaching staff and volunteers added to the large attendance."

He added: "The P4/5 course was 1400m in length around a very undulating course that used all the natural features of the park.

"The P6/7 pupils raced over two laps (2800m) of the same testing track."

The event was the culmination of months of cross country coaching by P.E. specialists, volunteers and other staff at Moray schools. Pupils got information about local athletics clubs who are holding open sessions in the weeks following the competition to cater for increased demand on the back of it.

Applegrove and Kinloss have already benefitted from lunch time coaching sessions delivered by Forres Harriers coaches.

The Applegrove boys lifted the P6/7 team title with Ben Cameron placing 1st overall with 7.15 and Carey Flavell 2nd with 7.32, backed-up by Scott Perry in 5th with 7.53.

Dyke Primary also took the small schools team trophy in the P6/7 boys race.

In the P4/5 girls overall team section, Applegrove were 3rd place behind Bishopmill in 2nd and West End as winners.

Dyke were 3rd behind Portessie in 2nd and Cullen as winners of the girls small school teams.
