THERE were celebrations well into the wee small hours in Forres on Saturday after Forres Mechanics FC were crowned winners of the 2012 Higland League following a great game in Mosset Park.

The Cans lifted the trophy after beating Fraserburgh 1-0 in a nervy match, which they needed to win, to avoid relying on Cove losing.

It wasn’t a good day for their opposition, as the first ball in the net - which was the only one of the match - was the result of an own goal from Ryan Christie.

Things got worse and the Broch were down to ten men in the second half, but in an extremely tense atmosphere at Mosset Park, the Mighty Cans didn't take anything for granted, and kept cool to stake their claim and lift the crown.

This is the first time that the Cans have lifted the trophy since 1986 with celebrating expected to go on until the early hours in Forres.

Footballers, committee members and fans gathered at The Mosset Tavern for the official shindig afterwards with the trophy getting centre stage. Presentations, thanks and speeches followed with club chairman Dr James Anderson addressing the crowds.

Congratulations Cans - We new you could do it. Full match report from Stevie Rattray in this week’s edition. Why not pick up your footie strip / top in the office when you buy your Gazette...
