It's been a good start to the Highland League season for Forres Girls' under-14s football team.

The girls took on Highland rivals Inverness Caledonian Thistle Reds under-14s in their latest match and dug deep for a 2-1 win on Saturday.

Mosset Park provided the setting for the Forres girls to record their first home victory and a healthy crowd ensured both teams were given a rousing welcome as they took the field.

It was Forres that started the brightest and they took the game to their Inverness rivals from the first whistle, and it was Roxy Homer who opened the scoring for the home side after 15 minutes.

Collecting a pass from Amy Sutherland, Homer held off the first defender and cut inside the second defender to then finish well from a narrow angle.

The well drilled Inverness side responded, and the remainder of the half saw both teams on the front foot, but clear chances were at a premium as both sides defended well.

Forres took a deserved 1-0 lead in at the break.

Within five minutes of the restart, it was all square. A speculative effort from wide on the left sailed over the head of the Forres goalkeeper. A well-hit shot that gave the keeper no chance.

Forres showed great resilience and came back into the game and in the following 20 minutes they competed for every ball with Macey Gammie racing clear on a number of occasions and causing panic in the Inverness defence.

With five minutes left on the clock, Jessica Porter drove in on goal and was brought down by the opposition goalkeeper.

From the resultant free kick, Isla Franklin stepped up and, from a tight angle struck a low effort on goal that evaded the goalkeeper at the near post.

Forres held on for the 2-1 win in what was a close and thrilling encounter for everyone involved.

Club chairman and coach Graeme Sutherland said: “We are pleased with how resilient the girls were and whilst we weren’t at our best, the girls battled hard, showed great endeavour, and responded well once we conceded a goal.

"Jessica MacDonald, Alex McCairn, Eva Ingram, Georgia Forsyth, and Cheryl Morrison all made sure their Inverness opponents were given very little encouragement and defended well throughout and this is part of the game that the girls must also learn to do.

"We now get back to training again ahead of our next game against Inverness Caledonian Thistle Blues on Saturday 13th May in Forres.”
