FORRES Girls Under 14s picked up their maiden victory after a long trip north at the weekend, defeating Brora Rangers 3-2.

Forres made the trip north to Golspie to face Brora in the first round of the Highland League Cup – with a double from Isla Franklin and a Roxy Homer strike sealing the girls’ passage into the next round.

A Forres Girls spokesman said: “We are delighted that the girls managed to pick up a win.

“Even more pleasing, though, is the effort and improvement we are seeing, on a weekly basis, from all the girls that attend our training sessions.

“They are working hard, learning new skills and being challenged against good opposition regularly, and this can only be good for them.

“We now go into a short break from competitive fixtures and whilst training will continue we will now work towards our next game versus Inverness Caledonian Thistle Girls on Saturday, April 22, in Forres.”

An 8am start didn’t affect the Forres girls at the weekend as they raced into a 1-0 lead in six minutes, with Isla Franklin’s long-range effort evading the clutches of the home goalkeeper.

With 25 minutes gone it was 2-0 to the away side as Roxy Homer raced onto a through ball to slot past the outrushing Brora keeper.

At this point Forres were well on top and could have added further to their tally, but as the clock ticked towards half-time it was Brora who snatched a goal back.

A deflected free-kick made it 2-1 right on the stroke of the break.

The second half started brightly for Forres and Franklin grabbed her second with a well hit free-kick giving the goalkeeper no chance.

With five minutes left a Brora corner was sliced into the Forres net for an own goal to set up a nervous finale.
