A local sports club has made history as the first team of females to take part in a competitive football match in Forres for decades.

Forres Girls FC (FGFC) played their opening game in the Highland Under-14 9v9 League against Brora at Mosset Park, home of the town’s representatives in the top adult division of the Highland League, Forres Mechanics.

FGFC chairman, Graeme Sutherland, confirmed the squad performed well despite losing their first nine-a-side battle.

He said: “We started off well and had the better of the first half. The girls created a few good chances.

“The second half was nip and tuck, and Brora snatched the winner against the run of play with just minutes remaining. We are very proud of their effort on the day and the commitment they have made to training over the last few months and in some cases years.”

The match was the first fixture FGFC has had “at home” since the club was founded in 2018.

Graeme added: “It might be the first competitive fixture for girls and women held in the town for decades! Using Mosset Park was a real boost for both sets of players and their families.”

The under-14s team took on last season’s league winners Ross County at the recreation grounds in Invergordon on the weekend following, eventually losing out 4-2. Their next scheduled tie is on March 18 when they head to Brora for a cup match.

FGFC under-8,10 and 12 squads most recently played at the Moray Festival in Elgin following similar recent away trips to Inverness.

Training is at Grant Park on Monday and Wednesday evenings but moves to Forres House Community Centre during the winter months. Sessions typically focus on technique and skill, with fun activities based around practices and small sided games.

FGFC currently has 94 registered players born between 2008 and 2017.

“We welcome all abilities to come along and give football a go,” said Graeme.
