With current Cans number two Brian MacLeod stepping down due to work commitments, MacDonald his recruited his former team-mate who he played with at Forres and Clach.

MacLean was previously a coach at Ross County and worked with some of the current Mechanics team whose careers began with the Dingwall club’s youth development scheme.

The pair will be joined by another former Cans player Fraser Bremner as first team coach.

MacDonald said: “That will give us a bit more stability and something to work with. Brian will step aside due to his work commitments.

“I have played with Steve at Forres and Clach, but I’ve never worked with him in a coaching capacity.

“He coached at Dingwall and quite a few of the young boys we have here just now, he coached them as younger players so he knows a few of them and they know him from the area we are from.

He is really keen to get back into football and he enjoyed his time at Forres before, where he played at centre-half.”

MacLean will begin his new role at Mechanics at the start of next week.

Tomorrow's League Cup tie against Clach was originally postponed last Wednesday, but Forres have again been cleared by Buckie Thistle to play loan goalkeeper Lee Herbert in the big match.

Lee and Graham Fraser also return to the Cans squad, while Ruari Fraser will be assessed after picking up a calf injury against Deveronvale.
