Forres Mechanics 0 Keith 6

Having made the most of the May Day weekend to celebrate the title success it was probably was not too big a surprise to find that the Mechanics players looked as though they were suffering from a title party hangover on Wednesday night as they were thumped 6-0 by Keith.

One of Charlie Rowley’s assistant managers Kenny Hendry accepted that the scoreline could partly be attributed to what had gone before but added that he would take a 6-0 defeat at the end of every season if the league title was won beforehand.

Hendry said, “I think saying we had a wee hangover is possibly an understatement. I don’t think you can take anything away from what we have achieved this season and if we were to win the league next season again and then get beat in the last game 6-0 I don’t think we would be too upset.”

“The better team won there is no question about it. We had the golf outing and celebrated on Sunday so there was another late night and you get days like this. Everything has finished a bit earlier this year so it gives the guys a chance to have a rest, recharge their batteries and come back with the intention of retaining the title.”

Charlie Rowley took the opportunity to give all those players who hadn’t started at the weekend a shirt for this match and with only Lee Fraser and Robbie Taylor unavailable through injury that meant there were seven changes to the line up which got the job done v Fraserburgh.

Stuart Knight, Graham Fraser, Nathan Sharp and Simon Allan the only players to retain their place with Steven Fraser, Jordan Main, Fraser Bremner, Gordon McNab, Steven Ross, Matty Davidson and Ryan Green all taking the pre match guard of honour.

Unfortunately that was the highlight of the game for the Mechanics. They went a goal behind in the 17th minute when Cammy Keith neatly turned away from Cammy Keith and struck an effort that was going in before Andy Anderson poked it over the line to claim the goal and beg the question of whether or not he was offside.

.In the 25th minute goalscorer Anderson played the ball to Andy McAskill who in turn fed Cammy Keith. He too looked to be in an offside position but he wasn’t dallying and had rounded Stuart Knight before being brought down. The keeper escaped a red card but was beaten by the league’s top scorer from the penalty spot.

Things went from bad to worse in the 38th minute when Forres didn’t get the free kick they were looking for when Anderson tackled Jordan Main and while the Can Cans hesitated Stuart Walker and Cammy Keith combined to make it 3-0.

Forres’ best chance of the half, and potentially the game, came shortly before the break when Graham Fraser rose to head Simon Allan’s corner goalwards. Murray Kinnaird slowed its progress but it took a last gasp challenge on the line to deny Ryan Green from poking home the loose ball.

On another day Forres may have felt aggrieved about a number of the marginal decisions in the game which often lead to goals and there was another example of this early in the second half when Stuart Knight dived to clutch a three yard “pass back” from Nathan Sharp

The players lined up on the goalline in the Alamo formation and duly charged down the initial effort from the indirect free kick. Knight made a great save to block the 6 yard effort but could do nothing about Dean Donaldson’s bouncing bomb shot on the rebound.

There was little Knight could do about goal number five either which arrived 15 minutes from time. Andy McAskill’s right footed curling effort from the edge of the penalty area was placed perfectly into the top corner of the net and those in the stand who had an ideal view of the shot begrudgingly had to applaud this fine effort.

Keith remained hungry for more while Forres struggled to gain the energy to battle on and the Maroons were to add a sixth to round off the scoring with Cammy Keith showing good close control to set up a simple finish to complete his hat trick.

Gazette Gold Star: As you would expect it was tough to single anyone out in a 6-0 performance therefore our final Gold Star of the season goes to the group of young fans known as the Ryan Green Fan Club. They provided most of the entertainment on the night from a Forres perspective with their singing, chanting and humourous game of “follow the linesman”.
