INTERNATIONAL DJs with an eclectic taste are performing in Forres this weekend.

Fifers Karawane - AKA DJs Mark 92 and Ali A - are keen to share their world music records at the Eagle on Saturday April 9 from 9pm-1am.

Mark (real surname Thomson) confirmed, as well as DJ-ing frequently in Barcelona and Berlin, Karawane are often on the bill at the Blue Arrow Jazz Club in Glasgow and have played the Belladrum Festival.

He said: “We are conscious of offering something different and positive. We’ll play everything from Colombian Salsa Dura and Congolese hip-hop to urban tracks from Brazil and Ghanain Afrobeat. Our sets are a joyous journey!”

Mark 92 and Ali A (real surname Aitken) grew up in Glenrothes but lost touch for 20 years when Mark went to live abroad. They reconnected at an Afrobeat night in a Senegalese restaurant in Barcelona. On Mark’s return to Scotland, the friends decided to set something up that reflected their love of global music and culture, and to have an outlet for Ali’s work as a producer.

Mark said: “Karawane reflects the rootsier, folkier side of the dancefloor, rather than the over-edited and over-westernised take. We now play a wide variety of club nights in places from big city clubs to village halls plus run our own events as promoters including The Nu Lands World Ceilidh in Cromarty and the Tropical North weekender in Lochinver.”

The pair have also supported the Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show when the star is in Scotland.

Karawane open doors to genres many people would not hear otherwise.

“Music is music,” said Mark. “Our nights have such a happy vibrancy and people need that more than ever. Come along, find your own space and be whoever you are.”

Karawane have played Forres before and, as promoters, brought Step It Up (reggae) Soundsystem from Edinburgh.

“Everyone wants to come together and cut loose, and that’s what we’re all about,” finished Mark. “Oh, and if you have bongos, djembes, percussion, rattlers or shakers ... bring them along too!”
