Berry Burn Community Fund awards to Moray Firth Credit Union, Logie Primary School Parent Council and Forres Skate Park Initiative

ANOTHER three local projects have received a total of £17,000 funding generated by natural energy.

Moray Firth Credit Union, Logie Primary School Parent Council and Forres Skate Park Initiative (FSPI) successfully applied for the 27th round of awards from the Berry Burn wind farm Community Fund.

Fund chairwoman, Dr Jana Hutt, confirmed a total amount of £64,285.64 was awarded in the area and to eight further projects around Grantown-on-Spey.

She said: "I am delighted at the number and range of projects - in the wake of the disruption caused by the Covid pandemic - that have been supported in this round.

"We congratulate the groups and individuals who contributing to the community in our area."

The fund receives an index-linked annual budget of £234,844 from international renewables company Statkraft, whose 29-turbine Berry Burn wind farm lies between Forres and Grantown.

It is overseen by 11 volunteer members, living and working within its operational boundary which takes in the community council areas of Forres, East Nairnshire, Grantown-on-Spey, Cromdale and Advie, Speyside, Heldon, Findhorn and Kinloss, Finderne and Dyke Landward.

The annual budget is spread over three awards rounds held during the year. The total contribution to date is £1,652,012.39.

The awards in round 27 were: £10,000 to Moray Firth Credit Union towards a new computer system; £4,600 to Logie Primary School Parent Council for a weatherproof storage container for gym and sports equipment; £2,400 to Forres Skate Park Initiative Funding for project management; £20,000 to Grantown Initiative for refurbishment of Burnfield public toilets; £8,248.80 to Grantown YMCA Community Centre for LED lighting and infra-red heaters; £7,500 to Strathspey Works Grantown Remakery for an air source heat pump heating system; £3,604.84 to Strathspey Rovers Junior Football Club for storage facility improvement; £2,432 to Adam Howarth for a replacement game fridge to continue providing locally sourced food to the community free of charge; £2,000 to Strathspey Camanachd towards funding pitch lettings and use of changing rooms; £2,000 to Grantown Try-Tri for hire of a race timing system, medals and pool/venue hire for triathlon; £1,500 to Grantown Society towards funding the Fiddler of Strathspey Festival.

The date of the next awards meeting is June 12, with the closing date for applications on May 8.
