A fond farewell was said earlier today to the Hercules which is being retired by the RAF at the end of this month.

As part of a day-long tour of UK airbases, three of the planes flew over RAF Lossiemouth shortly before 1pm.

They were accompanied by an escort of two Typhoons who flew out to meet them.

Amongst the many watching from Lossie's west beach and other vantage points were a couple who met and fell in love thanks to the Hercules.

Geoff and Helen Fulcher are both ex-RAF.

Now living in Inverness, the pair had travelled over to Moray to view the fly-past and take some photos.

Geoff, who was an RAF engineer, said: "They were unique planes, doing a unique job, flown by unique people. It's sad to see them go."

The Hercules began its RAF service in 1966.

Commonly nicknamed 'The Workhorse', as well the "Fat Alberts", the planes have been involved in numerous military and humanitarian operations during the past 57 years, seeing active service across the globe.

Also among the onlookers at Lossie today were Gordon Flett, his wife Lesley and their springer spaniel Bracken.

Gordon, an aviation enthusiast who lives in Grantown, joked: "Usually I only find out about things after they've happened, but I read this morning that the planes would be flying over.

"It's a gorgeous day, so we thought we'd come along. The Hercules has been a great servant to the RAF over many years."
