MORAY residents interested in becoming a councillor are being encouraged to attend an information session on the first day of next month.

Prospective candidates will get an insight into local government, the role councillors play in the democratic process, and more information on what’s involved in standing for election.

The next local elections are on May 5.

Nomination papers must be submitted by 4pm on March 30.

Denise Whitworth, Moray’s Returning Officer, said the virtual event will be an excellent opportunity for those considering representing their communities to speak with senior managers at the council.

She added: "Being a councillor is a challenging but rewarding role.

"There are opportunities to positively influence local policy, decision-making and services.

"Councillors make hugely important decisions which affect the very communities they live in and represent."

Ms Whitworth stated there would be advice about the role of a councillor, the importance of community leadership and an overview of the council's strategic priorities.

The online session will also cover more practical ground, such as training, support, pay, pensions, offices and equipment.

Links will be sent out before noon on March 1, and the online session will take place between 6pm-8pm that same day.
