A UNIFORM recycling project at a local school is proving popular.

Applegrove Primary depute head teacher Katie Lockhart, the parent council and the school eco team rejuvenated the scheme earlier this year, making jumpers, polo shirts, dresses and school trousers available to re-use.

Ms Lockhart said: “We keep the uniforms in boxes - the parent council and janitor maintain them. We would like to include more children in the initiative to ensure greater ownership. There’s no charge but some parents are interested in making a donation.”

Pupils Katie Greene (8) and Freddy Milton (6) appreciate the need to make full use of clothing.

Katie said: “If we don’t recycle they could go to waste. If you recycle, they could be given to somebody else!”

Freddy added: “If the clothes are in good condition then we can recycle them.”

Last year’s P6/7 class created posters to encourage the use of recycled uniforms.

Applegrove school eco team refreshes themes in the school needing attention each year. The results of a school survey formed an action plan for the new term with litter, school grounds and global citizenship themes.

“We would love to develop recycling on a bigger scale,” added Ms Lockhart. “We will be looking to develop this too.”
