A LOCAL building is to feature in a national free festival of places, history and culture.

Forres Area Community Trust (FACT) is welcoming virtual visits of Forres Town Hall on Doors Open Days 2021, having put together a comprehensive tour for internet users rather than inviting face-to-face visits.

FACT project officer, Lorretta Oliphant, confirmed being part of the national event will help raise awareness of the building, and remind people of the activities inside.

She said: “A decision was taken earlier in the year to make it a virtual event due to the unpredictability of Covid restrictions. The Scottish Civic Trust and Moray Council asked participants for a short video illustrating aspects of the venue, to enable folk to virtually explore.

"We’ve kept it to five minutes long and it will be available on Saturday, September 18 to 21 via a YouTube link, our website and the Scottish Civic Trust page.

"For less time than it takes to drink a cup of tea, you can experience a brief history of our amazing town hall, our gem on High Street, so often overlooked.”

Each September, the Doors Open Days festival offers access to over a thousand sites and events across Scotland.

The aim is to ensure that the country’s built and cultural heritage is made accessible. Doors Open Days’ first digital festival in 2020 welcomed 184,000 virtual visits.

The 2021 festival will have both online and in-person events and activities. It is supported by Historic Environment Scotland, and is part of European Heritage Days.

Director of Scottish Civic Trust, Doors Open Days national co-ordinator, Dr Susan O’Connor, said: “Hundreds of venues are busy organising events, planning walking tours and creating videos and other virtual activities.”
