Jamie Halcro Johnston, whose Highlands and Islands constituency includes Moray, has spoken out following yesterday's announcement by the First Minister of a limited relaxation of lockdown restrictions.

Mr Halcro Johnston said: "I agree with Nicola Sturgeon that, as restrictions are eased, people must remain aware of the dangers of the infection rate increasing again.

"But her approach, while providing some welcome news, will leave many families and businesses disappointed at the continuing restrictions and lack of clarity in key areas.

"It is disappointing that some of our smaller shops will be unable to open, if they can safely, at an earlier stage."

Mr Halcro Johnston also pointed to hospitality businesses, stating that many are nearly "on their knees".

He added: "It's disappointing that many hospitality businesses which can – and are ready to operate outdoors safely will remain closed for the foreseeable future."

In addition, Mr Halcro Johnston, who is the Shadow Education Minister had a swipe at the Scottish Government for its handling of how children will return to school.

He said: "There appears to be little further clarity in what the school re-opening plans actually mean and what attempts there will be to increase the number of class contact hours once pupils return in August.

"That’s a real issue of concern to parents, many of whom are needing to return to work but without an idea of how they will access the necessary childcare.

"There has been an abject failure of national political leadership from the Education Secretary John Swinney on school and early years.

"We are not out of this heath crisis yet, but the Scottish Government’s so-called ‘cautious approach’ risks an economic and social time-bomb when we are."
