STEM charity Techfest will deliver eight maths workshops as part of the Maths Masterclass series for north-east school pupils, which is sponsored by Aberdeen-based oil and gas operator Serica Energy.

Predicting who might win the 2024 Australian Open Championship and understanding how maths is used in the treatment of diseases such as diabetes are among the topics that will be used to bring maths to life in the new series.

Around 50 young people are expected to sign up to attend the classes on Saturday mornings, which are being run in partnership with The Royal Institution.

Dr Yashka Smith, STEM Lead at TechFest, said: “We are excited to bring the Maths Masterclass series back to Aberdeen this autumn and we’re looking forward to introducing another group of young people to new and exciting maths concepts.

“The sessions are interactive and are designed to nurture the pupils’ curiosity and highlight how mathematical concepts are applied in the real world.

“During this series of Maths Masterclasses, maths will once again be brought to life as the pupils cover topics ranging from understanding the odds involved in the Australian Open Championship to how maths is used in the treatment of diseases such as diabetes.

“The range of topics will give pupils the opportunity to test their practical skills with real-life challenges."

The Maths Masterclasses are for S2 pupils who are nominated by their maths teacher because they show a special interest in the subject. The masterclasses provide an opportunity to investigate different mathematical topics that are not taught in the classroom.

The series, which will also include a session on interesting numbers as well as a workshop on estimation and very large numbers, is delivered by teachers, academics and mathematicians. It is a fun way for the young people to discover different mathematical concepts.

The workshops will take place between November 4 and March 16 at the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University.

The closing date for nominations is Tuesday, September 3 and teachers should contact Dr Smith ahead of this date by emailing masterclasses@techfest.org.uk
