A LOCAL company has won a top award at the national Energy Efficiency Awards.

AES Solar, Lea Road, was selected in the National Solar PV Project of the Year category from a shortlist by a panel of judges for a pioneering project at Edinburgh Castle. All awards were open to anyone involved in the UK’s energy saving and efficiency sector.

AES managing director George Goudsmit said: “To be acknowledged for our efforts nationally is astounding - and amongst such stiff competition too.

“We owe our success to our team’s dedication and expertise. This triumph also underscores the excellence of our partners. Historic Environment Scotland’s invaluable support and trust were also instrumental. AES Solar extends heartfelt thanks to all those who contributed.”

AES Solar’s finance director Lynn Davidson and managing director George Goudsmit are presented the award by representatives from the award sponsors, Simply Eco, and Tony Hadley MBE.

AES’ energy efficiency measures involved the installation of solar PV panels on the roof of the Scottish National War Memorial and the associated cabling, running from the memorial roof into the palace block. The 84 black panels are only visible from the air. The memorial building is a single-storey masonry and reinforced concrete building situated within the grounds of the castle, constructed between 1924-1927.

AES has also worked on Historic Environment Scotland’s Crichton Castle; installed thermal panels on the roofs of seven B-listed Georgian tenements in a part of Edinburgh that is both a conservation area and a world heritage site; and installed solar thermal panels on a Grade B Listed building on Balmoral Royal Estate. More than 700 people attended the Hilton Metropole at the NEC Birmingham for a gala dinner and awards ceremony hosted by TV presenter Dan Walker. Eighties pop legend Tony Hadley – who achieved fame with Spandau Ballet - presented the awards in 22 categories.
