AN independent local theatre company is staging a play by actors who completed its 'eco theatre' course.

'Confessions' at Universal Hall on Sunday, January 28 is the culmination of Theatre of the 7 Directions theatre course that started last November, ahead of two new courses starting next month.

A play spokesperson said: "We have all done things that we are not proud of, and most people have hidden secrets. Join us for an evening of revealed scandal and intrigue."

The play text was completed by director Laura Pasetti and the cast. Twelve people with little or no theatre experience took part in the course and helped to produce the play which focuses mainly on monologues.

Confessions starts with the loudspeaker announcement "You are locked in and cannot leave until you have confessed”. The voice does not add what has to be confessed, or why, but it is clear that attendees are strongly encouraged to hear all 12 full confessions.

Ecotheatre addresses humans' connection to nature and ecology. Through workshops combining performance art with self-improvement techniques, participants are guided through fostering deeper relationships with the inner-self, other people, and life around them.

Ms Pasetti explained: "Humans don’t function if we aren’t connected with our community, environment, ancestors and future generations.

"Acting techniques and exercises are taught over three months to encourage full embodiment of character. Personal development is incorporated into the creation process, with the actors guided through self-reflection and overcoming obstacles such as the embarrassment of performing in front of others."

The next two eco theatre courses, one for children and one for adults, will start next month. Based on a re-imagined version of Midsummer's Night Dream, the children's one will start on February 20 and the adults on February 25.

The two courses will culminate in an intergenerational outdoor performance at the beginning of June. Participants are welcome to join the course even if they do not wish to perform.
