THE Scottish SPCA is appealing to animal lovers to donate blankets for animals in their Aberdeenshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre at Drumoak.

Scotland's animal welfare charity has been unable to accept used or hand knitted soft furnishings due to contamination risks linked to coronavirus

The charity’s centre, which is situated just outside Aberdeen, has already cared for over 500 animals this year although is not open to the public due to the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

Centre manager Louise Griese said, “We’re struggling to keep up with the demand for blankets at the moment.

“Normally we have lots of donations of second hand blankets, towels and sheets coming in but because our centre is closed to the public due to the coronavirus crisis we’ve been unable to accept these like we normally would.

“Instead members of the public can donate through our Amazon wishlist or by direct delivery from any other retailer.

“We would ask that only brand new items are donated due to potential risk of contamination from used items.

“We ask that people do not donate duvets or pillows as we find our animals can easily tear these apart.

“We’re also in need of towels as we use around 20 of these per day.

“We hope kind-hearted locals will get behind our appeal as it would make lots of animals very happy.”

Donations can be sent via Amazon Wishlist at https://amzn.to/2XVL9Mt or other any other retailer who offers a direct delivery service.

The charity has also been appealing for members of the public to make reusable face masks to be used by staff both at Drumoak and other centres across Scotland. Stocks of disposable masks the SSPCA have are being used at up rapidly and people are being asked to help out by making and donating face masks made from tightly woven cotton.

Everyone who sends in a mask will be entered in to a prize draw to win an exclusive, private tour around the SSPCA's National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Clackmannanshire. Those submitting masks should therefore include their name and either their address and phone number or an email address in their package.

Finished face masks can be sent to the Scottish SPCA National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross, Alloa, FK10 3AN and these will be distributed throughout the centres in Scotland.
