A LOCAL church is hosting a soup and sweet in aid of a war-torn country.

The community is invited to lunch at St Leonard’s Church Hall on Tuesday, March 29 in aid of the Ukraine Emergency Appeal.

Church clerk Roy Anderson confirmed the event is the organiser’s first fundraiser.

He said: “It’s important for everyone to show support for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. We must do everything we can to help them - at present it appears sending money is more practical than sending goods.”

The Ukraine Emergency Appeal is being organised by international humanitarians Concern who are co-ordinating a response with the United Nations to the attacks on the country’s population by Russia. Concern are delivering life-saving aid in Ukraine and at its borders.

The soup and sweet is on from noon-1.30pm with entry by donation to the appeal.

“Everyone is very welcome,” said Roy. “Please show support for the beleaguered citizens of Ukraine. The soup will be vegetable-based with a selection of sandwich fillings including chicken, egg, cheese and tuna and tasty bites such as sausage rolls, quiche, vol-au-vents etc.”

St Leonard’s Tuesday lunches have been running for several weeks. The food, prepared by chef Jim Aird, usually costs £4 per head.

The church’s Bite and Blether Lunch Club on Thursday also provides home-cooked, two course lunches plus tea and coffee for £5.
