THREE sisters went an extra mile to thank health service staff who saved their brother’s life.

Originally from Forres, Margaret Archibald, Ishbel Munro and Audrey Stewart raised £1745 through sponsorship of a September health kick for Woodend Hospital and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) where sibling George Nicol was looked after following a crash on the A96 near Huntly in February.

George was taken to ARI with a shattered right leg, broken back, neck and ribs. He also suffered a stroke which left him partly paralysed. George was on life support for a month before being transferred to the National Spinal Injuries Unit in Glasgow for an operation. Eventually, he was moved back to ARI and then to Woodend where his recovery continues.

Ishbel came up with the idea for the thank you challenge. She managed to walk 10 miles every day, Margaret burned off at least 650 calories a-day, and Audrey surpassed her aim of walking at least three miles a day.

Ishbel said: “The wards have helped George recover physically and keep his spirits up. We are grateful to everyone.”

The sponsorship funded a television and DVD player for the patients’ lounge at the Neuro Rehabilitation Unit at Woodend Hospital.

“Five universal TV remote controls and aerial cables were also donated to the unit,”said Audrey.

“Staff have done a remarkable job getting George back on his feet” added Margaret.

ARI Ward 207, where George also spent time, received a DVD player and Samsung tablets.

The sisters, George and their other brother Colin, grew up at Kingsway, attending Applegrove then Forres Academy.

George, who now lives in Fochabers, said: “I’m so proud of my sisters. The gifts to Woodend and ARI will provide entertainment.”
