The package was intercepted by security staff but Police Scotland said that the item posed no danger to the public.

It is understood that Moray's MP did not purchase the item personally and that his family had intended to purchase a toy laser gun for his son.

However, the wrong item was bought and was delivered to the incorrect address.

A Scottish Conservative spokesperson said: "This item was a toy for Douglas' son. The wrong item was purchased and it was also delivered to the wrong address. It will be returned. Douglas is grateful to the security team for their action and understanding."

A Scottish Parliament spokesperson added: "We don’t comment on individual security matters. As you would expect, all mail to all MSPs is screened for anything potentially harmful."
