Roadworks taking place on the A96 in Alves ahead of part-time 20mph zone coming into effect near primary school

ROADWORKS are taking place on the A96 in Alves this week ahead of a new part-time speed limit coming into effect through the village.
Construction firm Amey is undertaking electrical work on the road in preparation for a 20mph speed limit going past Alves Primary School.
The work, which Amey is completing on behalf of Transport Scotland, will create a 24/7 power supply on the trunk road that will allow for the implementation of the new speed limit.
Amey are unsure when the 20mph zone will come into effect but confirmed that these are 'preparation works'. The firm added that works will act as preparation for extending the 40mph zone through Alves.
It was announced in March 2022, after a speed check and public consultation by Transport Scotland, that the speed limit would be halved in the vicinity of Alves Primary to improve the safety of pupils.
The news was well received in the village, with Alves Primary School's head teacher James McLeman welcoming the decision.
Roadworks began on the morning of Monday, May 15, and will run between 8am and 7pm every day until Friday, May 19.
Lane closures will be deployed within and in the vicinity of Alves for the duration of the works, along with a combination two-way temporary traffic signals where required.
All schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if conditions are not favourable.
