A three-day festival of contemporary dance will be taking place in Moray this week from Friday to Sunday.

RISE 2023 is being staged by Dance North Scotland which is based at the Findhorn ecovillage and is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Featured performers at this year's festival will include Solène Weinachter, Sindri Runudde, Sonia Hughes, Thick & Tight, Matthew Hawkins, Salma Faraji, Simone Kenyon, and Kirstie Simson.

Solène Weinachter is a long-time performer with Scottish Dance Theatre and winner of the National Dance Award for outstanding female performance.

Sindri Runudde is a Swedish artist, whose solo performance will examine "love at first frequency".

Sonia Hughes' performance – I am from Reykjavik – is described as "part sculpture, part protest, part ceremony".

Meanwhile, Thick & Tight will use dance, mime, drag and lip syncing to bring back to life a series of famous and infamous historical characters.

Matthew Hawkins is an icon of dance in Scotland. Once a performer in legendary choreographer Michael Clarke’s first troupe, he has long been a formidable performer and choreographer in his own right.

Salma Faraji and Simone Kenyon are both artists in residence with the Arts in Moray culture collective.

Finally, Kristie Simson, who has a long-standing connection with Findhorn, will touch on themes of mortality and her own recovery from a life-threatening illness.

The performances will either be in the Universal Hall or around the ecovillage,

The festival is also going to include social events such as Dance North’s 20th birthday party, a fireside gathering, and a Sunday picnic.

Weekend tickets, one-day passes and a full list of times and dates are all available at www.dancenorth.scot/rise
