Club Secretary Anne McIntosh was given the honour of inaugurating the Season by bowling the opening jack.

The indoor bowling season started in Forres on Monday, September 4.

Forres Victoria Indoor Bowling Club (FVIBC) secretary Anne McIntosh bowled the first jack of the 2023/24 season at Forres Academy during a well-attended ‘hat night’.

Club spokesman Derek Crosby confirmed membership should number around 50 as regular competitions get underway.

He said: “Established and new members enjoyed playing on the five new carpets we purchased during the summer recess with a £2000 grant from the Gordon and Ena Baxter Foundation supplementing club funds.

“We hope the opportunity to play on these will attract entries from other clubs to our annual Open Triples competition from November 3-6!”

Hat nights are the mainstay of FVIBC, on Monday and Thursday evenings at the school.

“’Hat’ probably relates to olden times when money was put into a hat!” explained Mr Crosby.

“Nowadays, each player puts a small match fee into a kitty and the members of the winning team - teams are picked at random - on the night win a share, with some going towards the cost of running the event.”

FVIBC have internal knock-out competitions for members running throughout the season to April.

Open events invite entries from other clubs too.

Members also play in the Moray Indoor Bowling Association league from October to March.

“We also attend other clubs’ open competitions,” added Mr Crosby.

“There is certainly plenty of opportunity to bowl in Forres!”

Moray Council runs a Thursday morning taster session at Forres House Community Centre helped by FVIBC members.
