YOUTH crime was a focus for local police last month.

The Moray West Community Council Report issued to Forres Community Council covered priorities for the Lossiemouth and Fochabers, Forres and Speyside Community Policing Team areas during April, highlighting emerging issues “to help reduce crime and disorder, create safer communities and respond effectively to local concerns”.

Inspector for the area, Andrew Meikleham, discussed community engagement and reassurance.

He said: “PC White engages with Forres Academy and attends a weekly drop-in session for pupils. This is beneficial for the school and the wider community as teenagers have a face to put to their local officer which helps break down barriers.Talks with local youth leaders have commenced on restarting street football and basketball to encourage people to take an interest. Community officers also take part in proactive patrols, targeting road traffic offenders across the area and attending local schools to provide input on road safety.”

He added: “Please contact myself or the Forres and Speyside Community Policing Team if there are any issues you wish to raise or discuss.”

Antisocial behaviour, violence and disorder was covered in the report.

Two people were assaulted by a group of youths on High Street. Two of the young people have been charged and a report submitted to the Youth Justice management team.

Two people were charged with assault which left the victim with significant injuries. A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

And two people were also arrested for domestic incidents.

Road safety and road crime continues to be a focus for local police.

Officers engaged road users and attended hot spots in relation to speeding concerns. Several drivers have been issued fixed penalties as a result.

Officers conducted further patrols in relation to drinking and driving ahead of the May Day holidays and coronation.

One person was charged with a number of driving offences following a road traffic collision. A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

And three people were charged with drink/drug driving-related offences.
