THE TOWN’S most popular local music group is one of two choices for a supermarket’s community funding this year.

Shoppers can vote for Forres and District Pipe Band (FDPB) - numbering 30 members and based at Forres Town Hall - to receive support from the Co-op Community Fund at either Forres branch - the other option is Findhorn Dunes Trust.

FDPB spokeswoman Sharon Carmichael explained the group hopes to raise funds for new uniforms and tuition costs.

She said: “Family and friends have become Co-op members to support us whilst shopping. FDPB supports local events - it’s important to keep this tradition. In turn, the folk of Forres have always been generous in support us.”

FDPB coaches young people in the tradition of the Scottish bagpipes and drums. Practice, led by Pipe Major Johnathan Scott and supported by pipe sergeant Emma Lawrence, takes place on Sundays from 6- 9pm and Tuesdays from 7-9pm. The playing members are supported by a committee of volunteers.

“Our committee focuses on fundraising to ensure the band can operate smoothly,” said Mrs Carmichael. “We encourage the youth of the area to enjoy the benefits of being part of a band and their skills will be passed on to future generations.”

FDPB had a short break from practice after the Forres Christmas lights switch-on and a fundraising coffee morning at the town hall. This year, the band will open the Ardersier Gala Day before a busy Highland Games season in the summer. Starting with Forres Highland Games, FDPB will then perform at events in Abernethy, Dufftown and Nairn amongst others.

“These weekends are firm favourites with the band,” added Mrs Carmichael, “being well supported by family and friends.”

FDPB hopes, as well as fundraising events such as their annual quiz night, Co-op funding will help pay for uniforms, tuition and instrument maintenance.

Mrs Carmichael finished: “Funding will help us continue to encourage self discipline and togetherness, promote teamwork and offer a family-friendly environment.”

When Co-op members buy selected products and services, 2p for every £1 spent goes into their membership accounts. They can select a local cause to support via the Co-op app or website or the Co-op will share the funds equally between the available causes. Funds are collected until the end of October. The money is allocated to the individual groups depending on how many members select them.
