A LOCAL charity has been awarded more than £90,000 for a new community vehicle.

Forres Osprey Bus (FOB) will invest £91,921.20 from the Plugged-In Communities Fund in a new electric minibus, replacing the diesel bus it has owned for some time.

FOB Trust chairman, Shaun Moat, confirmed the new conveyance is a Fiat E-Ducato with a range of 140 miles from full charge, with 13 seats and two wheelchair spaces inside.

He said: “The funding provided by Transport Scotland and Energy Savings Trust covers the cost of the purchase and we can access funding for an electric charging point too.”

FOB secretary and treasurer, Jo Lenihan, explained the charity is doing its bit for the environment too.

She said: “Switching to an electric minibus means we can contribute to the government’s target transition of net zero and reduce overall vehicle miles travelled by 20 per cent by 2030.”

The new vehicle is expected to be delivered early next year.

Shaun said: “We are keen for community groups to maximise its use. We want to make the best of such a modern and economical asset. However, we need support so please consider volunteering as a driver or trustee.”

The trust has also received funding from the Employer Recruitment Incentive offered by Moray Council for a part time bus administrator.

“The job is for 15 hours per week over a fixed term of a year,” said Shaun, “but this may be extended with further funding.”

FOB is also run by volunteer trustees Lorna Creswell, Kev Skivington and David Parker.

Shaun said: “We’re looking for more people to join our board. No experience is needed, just a willingness to help deliver this vital service. We’re also looking for volunteer drivers so we can offer additional services such as town runs or trips out.”

Kev added: “Anyone who can spare even just a couple of hours would help us greatly. Full training is provided. As long as you’re under 70 and have a full driving license, you can drive the bus.”

The vehicle is stored at Forres House Community Centre and is available to organisations that support the elderly, disabled or children. Current user groups include a basketball club, walking group, church groups and Riding for the Disabled.

The bus is self-funded - users are asked to donate 50p per mile for its use.
