A LOCAL church recovering from financial losses during the covid lockdowns is hosting a musical open day.

The event, at St Leonard’s on Saturday, October 23 from 10am-4pm is being held to welcome more visitors to enjoy varied live music while finding out more about all that goes on in the church.

Reverend Donald Prentice confirmed entertainment will be provided by James wiseman on accordion (10am); Scots music ensemble James Alexander and Friends (11am); Roger Lander and James Alexander on organ and classical violin (12pm); fiddler Ian Campbell and Colin MacKay (1pm); Orkney folksters the Holderness Trio (2pm); Nashville country music from Colin MacKay; and Chris Neal's jazz saxophone (3pm).

Rev Prentice said: “St Leonard’s is a place of celebration of life and joy - our open day will be a festival of music.”

Session clerk Roy Anderson added that entry will be by donation.

He explained: “The church’s income reduced considerably while the premises had to close but the building still had to be maintained and crucial repairs carried out, and the costs of ministry also had to be met. The Church of Scotland has encouraged all churches to take part in a National Day of Giving, of which our open day is part.”

St Leonard’s is open at 10am from Monday to Thursday for interactive prayer, bible study and meditation. Some sessions are being led by new associate minister from South Africa, Reverend Steven Sass, who is with St Leonard’s for the next year.

Another new venture for the church will start on November 7 with the first monthly modern worship service led by a small praise band. After 18 months in abeyance during the pandemic, St Leonard’s Lunch Club for over 50s is back every Thursday at 12.30pm with a new chef. Two-course meals, plus tea and coffee, are provided for £5.
