The Moray Aerospace, Advanced Technology and Innovation Campus aims to create hundreds of new student places and provide the skills needed for working in the aviation sector.

Iain Stewart, the Minister for Scotland, made the announcement this morning during a visit to the military base.

A total of £21million will come from the UK Government's half of the £65million Moray Growth Deal, which was agreed a year last July.

Another £12.3million is earmarked to come from local partners.

Mr Stewart stated the project would turn Moray into a "global centre for aviation engineering".

He added: "Since the Moray Growth Deal was announced we have been working to make progress.

"I am delighted to confirm the UK Government will invest £21 million in this college hub which will help the region prosper from its aerospace sector.

"There is a significant way to go to get our economy back on track after the coronavirus pandemic, but we know that the City and Region Growth Deals will be crucial to Scotland’s economic recovery."

The aviation campus will be built on land owned by the Ministry of Defence outside the perimeter wire of the base.

No time frame has yet been announced.
