WATER safety workshops organised by a local village group were well received.

Findhorn Residents’ Association (FRA), with funds from Findhorn and Kinloss Community Council, commissioned Findhorn Marina’s North 58 Sea Adventures to deliver two free lessons to local members of the public during the Easter holidays.

North 58 Sea Adventures owner, Simon Paterson, explained, with more people accessing the waters around the village, encouraging an understanding of tides and safety is even more important.

He said: “We designed the sessions to be enjoyable and informative, with the aim of helping families understand potential dangers.

“We provided expert local knowledge of tides and currents, safer places to play in and on the water and advice on what to do if things go wrong.”

FRA chairman, Sam Russell, confirmed the workshops were fully booked up.

He said: “Feedback was very positive. Evaluation showed that everyone rated the instructors very highly, agreed that the course content was well planned, objectives were clear, and that their skills and knowledge were enhanced as a result of taking part.

“I would like to thank the community council for providing funding. I would also like to thank North 58 Sea Adventures for tailoring the sessions to meet the needs of children and families in the area.”

Participants told Sam they would recommend the safety sessions to their friends.

Sam said: “FRA supports groups and the amenities of Findhorn but we are aware that there was interest from families in Forres. Anyone interested in attending a workshop should contact North 58 Sea Adventures to discuss.”

Director of Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation (MIRO) Keith Parker’s granddaughter Mali attended one of the workshops.

He said: “MIRO is regularly called to rescue people who have been cut off by the tide, not just in Findhorn but often at the Old Bar off Nairn as well so it was sensible to teach youngsters and parents how to stay safe.

“The children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and had fun while they were learning.”

FRA meets regularly in the James Milne Institute, Findhorn. For more information contact Sam Russell on 07740763136.
