THE TRADITIONAL gathering in the town centre at Hogmanay has been cancelled for the second year running.

Organisers Forres Community Council (FCC) have reluctantly taken the decision due to fears around the potential spread of Covid-19 and have informed Forres and District Pipe Band who had agreed to perform at the Mercat Cross, as well as stewards led by Moray Councillor George Alexander.

FCC chairwoman Kathleen Robertson explained that the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant and the perceived public health risk left the group with no choice.

She said: "It is imperative that we act with social responsibility and consider the safety of our community, volunteers and those tasked to keep us safe.

"FCC wishes to thank you all for your help and support and understanding. We know how much the community loves to gather at the Cross for the bells. Hopefully we will be in a better place next year.

"Have a wonderful healthy Christmas and New Year."
