AROUND 76 players helped raise more than £9000 at a local annual golf tournament.

The Mark Duffus Memorial game – in memory of the organiser Albert Duffus’ late son – raised a total of £9273 to be divided amongst worthy causes.

Albert said: “It was another excellent event.

“The weather was fantastic and there was a great atmosphere.

“It was an enjoyable day out and an ideal way to celebrate Mark’s life.”

Mark, a 41-year-old former Queens Own Highlander, lost his life during an attack at North Gate Camp, Kabul, Afghanistan when a truck packed with explosives was driven into a vehicle bay.

Mark had been working for a security firm supplying close protection, and was one of seven who died in the battle with the attackers.

Many of the Duffus family served with the Queens Own Highlanders, including Albert who is helping to keep Mark’s memory alive through the annual golf event.

There are six trophies up for grabs every year: scratch (first and second); handicap (first and second); and scratch over-65s (first and second place).

There is also a fundraising raffle and auction.

Albert confirmed: “Auction items this year included a bottle of Flower of Scotland whisky commemorating the Keith versus Rangers match in season 1995/96.

“There was also a painting of then-Rangers manager, the late Walter Smith.”

Following the memorial, £2100 raised went to Poppy Scotland, £3000 to Erskine, £1000 to Cancer Research, £1000 to the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, £ and £1000 to Forres Golf Club.

Albert finished: “Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the event. Folk are already donating for the collection and putting their names down but the date is still to be confirmed. I’ll continue organising in aid of charities and in Mark’s name for as long as I can!”
