PICKING up a face mask at the town hall and leaving a donation will help a local charity.

The Whyte Family Trust, which, in 2016, launched the Mortuary for Moray Campaign to ensure provision of compassionate family bereavement suites across Scotland after Maryan Whyte was shocked by conditions at Spynie Hospital when she attended the facility after the death of her husband Frank, is making and donating hand-made coronavirus masks to Forres Area Community Trust (FACT).

Mrs Whyte has made around 150 of the 100 per cent cotton masks that have three layers, nose bridges and filter pockets, raising close to £500 for the trust.

She said: "We've sent Saltire masks out to the states and others to NHS staff in Scotland for private use."

FACT lead development officer Debbie Herron added: "They are comfortable to wear and very popular. People can pay what they can afford. Our volunteers and staff are supplied with PPE depending on the tasks they are doing in response to the Covid-19 situation."

The Whyte Family Trust, has been working on a new mortuary for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in recent months. The project is at the architectural planning stage and most of the trust's recommendations have been adopted for the bereavement suites.

Mrs Whyte added: "Dr Gray’s Hospital has not progressed since they freshened-up the waiting and viewing rooms of the interim mortuary in early 2019.

"Our scheduled meeting in March this year was understandably cancelled but the lack of progress is extremely disappointing.

"We will continue to strive for the necessary replacement of the current facility at Dr Gray’s and we thank everybody for their donations to help us in our campaign."
