A 39-year-old man who made off in a stolen ambulance was reportedly arrested this morning in Dufftown.

In what has been described as a "deplorable act" by the ambulance service, the vehicle was taken while it was attending a call-out in Kemnay at around 6.20am this morning.

After a pursuit of around 40 miles which saw the vehicle head north through Aberdeenshire and into Moray it was finally stopped in Dufftown after a stinger unit was deployed to bring it to a halt.

A police spokesperson said: "A 39-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the theft of an ambulance from an address in Kemnay.

"Following pursuit, the officers stopped the vehicle near Dufftown and made an arrest.

"Investigations are still ongoing."

A Scottish Ambulance spokesperson stated that alternative arrangements were made for the patient who was supposed to have been picked up by the ambulance.

They added: "The patient was transferred to hospital via another resource and was at no risk.

"Stealing an ambulance is a deplorable act.

"If anyone has information on this incident we would encourage them to contact police."
