LOCALS are being invited to join the Moray Climate Assembly this week for an evening of sharing and reflection on COP26.

tsiMORAY, which provides support and information to Moray's third-sector organisations, is keen for anyone who attended the Climate Conference in Glasgow, participated online or locally in a COP26-related event, or who has an interest in COP26, to join the members of the Moray Climate Assembly for a debrief event.

tsiMORAY leadership team member, Fabio Villani, confirmed the organisation is looking to gather insights, contributions, reflections and questions from as many local individuals and organisations as possible.

He said: "Different people will have had very different experiences, depending on whether they were in the Blue zone, the Green zone, demonstrating in the streets, participating in fringe sessions – online or face to face, or just following the event on social or mass media.

"Providing specific example of the climate and nature emergencies anywhere is of course tricky territory. Storms and extreme weather events have happened before, but scientists are telling us that their frequency and severity will continue to increase.

"All the same, I don’t think anyone would be able to name a specific event as a direct consequence of the climate emergency; that’s not the way it works."

He added: "There are an increasing number of species in decline, including a number of bird species familiar to people in Moray, and that there are increasing concerns regarding soil fertility."

The online event – "Moray Climate Assembly – Fair COP or COP Out?" – will help formulate next steps on the climate and nature emergencies in Moray.

Moray MSP and Scotland's Minister for Just Transition, Richard Lochhead, and other elected representatives will share their COP26 experiences.

Mr Lochhead said: “Moray has big role to play in Scotland’s journey to net zero given our natural resources and the number of organisations locally with an interest in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability.

“I know many people and groups from Moray either attended COP26 in person or joined in through online events. I’m delighted to be invited to meet with some of them to hear about their experiences and how we can work together for the good of the environment and our planet.”

Those interested can register to attend the event on Tuesday, December 14, between 7-9pm, here.
