A COMPANY based at Forres enterprise Park is launching new careers in the space industry.
Orbital launch services company Orbex’s annual internship programme is recruiting five employees to support its team of start-up experts.
CEO Phillip Chambers confirmed the programme offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
He said: “This is a brilliant opportunity to learn from experts and gain experience of working of different aspects of the Orbex rocket.
“As we progress towards the completion of Sutherland Spaceport and Orbex Prime, heralding our first launch, we are entering our next phase of growth.
“It’s a hugely exciting time to be joining and we are looking for some of Scotland’s home-grown STEM talent to be part of our journey to launch into orbit.”
Prime is a 19-metre-long micro-launcher designed to leave no orbital debris. It uses bio-propane, a renewable fuel that reduces its carbon footprint by up to 96 per cent compared to conventional rockets.
Orbex’s current staff have professional backgrounds with NASA, ESA, and several commercial spaceflight organisations.
The company has won more than a dozen contracts from bodies including the UK Space Agency (UKSA), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission Horizon programme.
In 2022, Orbex signed a lease with development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise for the spaceport location on the A’ Mhoine peninsula in Sutherland which will see the launch of up to 12 orbital rockets per year, carrying satellites into low Earth orbit.
The internship roles span different areas of the business, offering interns the chance to support with the design of the rocket, its data and software, electronics and testing.
Ruairidh Green from Elgin joined Orbex’s 2023/24 internship programme as an AIT Intern.
He said: “While studying Physics at the University of Glasgow, I was looking for professional work.
“I’d encourage those looking to learn new skills and the process behind developing a space company to apply!”
The available roles in the 2024/25 programme are: assembly, integration and test internship; assembly, integration and test avionics engineer intern; avionics internship; ground segment software internship; and structures internship.
