HELPING the environment through what we wear is the focus of a free community event next week.

The latest Climate Café at Transition Town Forres (TTF) will be focused on sustainable clothing - wearing it longer to save money, reducing landfill and looking after the planet.

tsiMoray project coordinator, Ann Davidson, is organising the event from 6-9pm on Thursday, August 31.

She said: "It's inspired by https://aberdeenclimateaction.org/2023/02/02/sustainable-clothing-choices/ plus links we have in Moray to groups tackling clothing and materials waste, encouraging re-use and upcycling.

"Clothing manufacturing and the fashion industry are responsible for around 10 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Complex supply chains are involved in other problems such around water pollution, workers’ rights and agricultural monoculture.

"It’s a big subject but our café focuses on raising awareness, things we can do ourselves such as repairing and re-using clothing."

She added: "We will hear from Ros Stubb at 'Repair What You Wear', plus get some examples of local action from Moyra Younie at Moray School Bank and Mike Ogg from H&M Designs."

As well as speakers, a hands-on repair session, shared experiences and discussion on next steps, there will be freshly cooked food.

"The evening will kick off with some amazing locally-sourced food from Medine Duff," said Ann. "Previous Climate Café attendees know how delicious it is!

"After the speakers and questions, we will finish with a 'Facilitating Collaboration' session hosted by me."

Ann claims that, on average, we only wear an average item of clothing seven times before we discard it.

She finished: "We can all help by becoming more aware of the issues and taking action on a personal, community and international level.

"Repair What You Wear want attendees to bring unwanted sewing threads on spools which they will re-use in future workshops."

Places are limited to 33. All participants will receive a kit for the upcycle session.
