Personnel from Kinloss Barracks have been awarded a special ceremonial sword to mark the community work they undertook during the pandemic.

The Firmin Sword of Peace Award celebrates humanitarian contributions made by units of the British Armed Forces.

Established by the British sword maker Wilkinson Sword in 1966, the award has gone this year to 39 Engineer Regiment.

During the pandemic the regiment supported seven health boards across 48 locations in Scotland, building and running coronavirus testing sites, as well as establishing a network of asymptomatic testing hubs.

Lt Col Adam Birley, the regiment's commanding officer, was presented with the sword on Thursday by Nancy Robson, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Moray,

The day, which also marked the 10th anniversary of regiment's move to Kinloss from Cambridgeshire, saw more than 200 personnel parade in front of families, guests and past members.

Lt Col Birley said: "This award is one of the highest accolades for a military unit.

"I am very proud of the outstanding work and selflessness of the men and women in this regiment.

"I'm very fortunate to be their commanding officer."

Recently 39 Engineer Regiment deployed in support of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Troops have also just returned from construction tasks in Mali and Iraq.
